This movement, which paved the way for Impressionism, valued painting directly from nature and sought a truthful, sensitive rendering of the landscape. The Barbizon School spans roughly from 1830 to 1875.
It first emerged in the 1830s, when artists such as Théodore Rousseau and Jules Dupré settled in the village of Barbizon, on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest, to work outdoors. Its peak came between 1848 and 1860, with figures like Jean‑François Millet and Charles‑François Daubigny gaining wider recognition. After 1870, the movement gradually gave way to Impressionism, though many painters continued to work in this quiet, realist‑romantic spirit well into the 1880s.
