This pastoral wall tapestry, woven in the Aubusson style, depicts a gentle countryside scene with sheep resting among trees. Made in the 1950s and woven in cotton, it has the soft, pale colours typical of mid‑century interpretations of classical French tapestries. Its rectangular format makes it ideal above a sideboard or over a doorway, where it brings a quiet decorative presence.
The sky shows delicate, feminine tones, and what may appear as a mark is in fact the reflection of the river — something difficult to capture accurately in photographs. The overall effect is calm, charming and full of that light pastoral poetry associated with traditional Aubusson‑inspired designs.

More Information
Over the centuries, the style of Aubusson tapestries has continually evolved. The piece I am offering is a 1950s reproduction of the classical and pastoral scenes created in the 17th and 18th centuries, influenced by painters such as Watteau and Boucher. These designs often feature mythological or pastoral subjects, gentle rural landscapes, shepherds and flocks, as well as architectural elements framed by borders that echo the look of carved picture frames.
