Magnificent reverse‑glass painting, Napoleon III style and period (circa 1860).
It depicts a classic and refined floral composition, characteristic of 19th‑century art.
The technique is particularly delicate: the painting is executed in reverse, directly on the inner surface of the glass, requiring the artist to paint the foreground details before creating the background.
The striking contrast between the deep black ground and the luminous softness of the rose bouquet (pink and yellow tones) highlights the azure shimmer of a butterfly — a romantic motif much appreciated at the time.
The piece is framed in a gilt stucco moulded frame, adorned with a fine beaded inner border that reinforces its authentic charm.
The patinated gilding gives the frame its warm, antique glow.
A feminine, delicate, utterly charming piece.

More Information

Style: Napoleon III

Nephew of Napoleon I, Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte was elected President of the Second Republic in 1848 before becoming Emperor Napoleon III in 1852 following a coup d'etat.

Napoleon III style is one of the most interesting even if nothing is really novel with elements borrowed from preceding styles. Based on the taste of the period, Japanese, Chinese and Oriental art brings a richness, abundance and eclecticism specific to this period.
