Set of four dining chairs
This charming set of chairs is characteristic of the Louis XVI style. Indeed, after the exploits of the Montgolfier brothers, balloon shapes and motifs came into vogue and became popular at the end of the 18th century.
The back of these four chairs represents a stylized hot-air balloon and their cane seat is decorated with a "balloon" fabric cushion.
Style: Louis XVI
Louis XVI, who reigned from 1774 to 1789, is remembered as the last absolute monarch. The French Revolution of 1789 overthrew the monarchy by divine right and Louis XVI was guillotined on January 21st 1793.
The Louis XVI style is classical, inspired by Antiquity, the shapes are geometric, the legs of the furniture are straight and light, often fluted. However, under the influence of Marie-Antoinette, the ornaments are enriched with musical and rural attributes, ribbon bows giving a delicate touch to the furniture.
