This rare pair of large Bordelaise Louis XV–style “tombeau” commodes, made in France in the 1950s, is a beautiful example of high‑quality craftsmanship.
French reproductions from this period are already sought after — but finding a matching pair is truly exceptional, as my lovely clients know well.
A “tombeau” commode is fully curved, both on the front and along the sides, its generous bombe silhouette recalling the contours of ancient sarcophagi.
Each piece features three drawers with superb gilt‑bronze mounts that stand out beautifully against the deep black wood.
Placed on either side of a double doorway, along a large wall, or facing each other in an entrance hall, this pair creates a striking, architectural presence.
Elegant, sculptural, and full of character — a pair that transforms a space with ease.

More Information
Style: Louis XV
Louis XV, known as the "Beloved" reigned over the kingdom of France from 1715 to 1774, he was the only king of France to be born and die at the Palace of Versailles.
The Louis XV style is characterized by its elegance and lightness. It is recognizable by the grace of the curved legs of the furniture with "pied de biche"(deer foot).
The wood is natural, gilded or painted. The "rococo" style ornamentation is inspired by nature and exoticism.
