Small oval Louis XVI‑style stool, dating from circa 1900, a piece of furniture that I’ve always found particularly appealing. Its sipo frame has that warm, mellow tone that catches the light with a quiet softness, and the marquetry around the belt — rosewood with a fine ebony line — adds just the right touch of refinement. The caning has been redone in the traditional way.

It’s a piece that settles naturally into a room. In front of a dressing table, or of a piano, or simply waiting as an occasional seat, it brings a graceful presence — slender lines, an oval silhouette, and that discreet charm that makes it so easy to live with.

More Information

Style: Louis XVI

Louis XVI, who reigned from 1774 to 1789, is remembered as the last absolute monarch. The French Revolution of 1789 overthrew the monarchy by divine right and Louis XVI was guillotined on January 21st 1793.

The Louis XVI style is classical, inspired by Antiquity, the shapes are geometric, the legs of the furniture are straight and light, often fluted. However, under the influence of Marie-Antoinette, the ornaments are enriched with musical and rural attributes, ribbon bows giving a delicate touch to the furniture.
