There is something irresistibly feminine about a Bonheur du Jour — that delicate French writing desk created for moments of quiet elegance.
This Napoléon III Bonheur du Jour, crafted in walnut, rosewood veneer and precious woods, captures that spirit beautifully. Its fine marquetry, its graceful pieds galbés, and its finely chiselled bronze mounts — gallery, mouldings, handles, escutcheon — all speak to the refined craftsmanship of 19th‑century France.
The upper gradin with its two small drawers and bronze‑rimmed gallery adds a touch of lightness, almost like a piece of jewellery resting atop the desk. In the apron, the writing drawer reveals a sliding panel lined with velvet, a discreet and charming detail that recalls the intimate world of feminine correspondence.
As with many Napoléon III pieces, this desk draws inspiration from earlier French styles, especially Louis XV, with its soft curves and romantic silhouette. The contrast of exotic veneers, the darkened woods, and the generous use of bronze give it that precious, slightly theatrical character so typical of the period.
A small desk, yes — but one with presence, grace, and a distinctly French sense of refinement.
A Bonheur du Jour that truly lives up to its name: a little daily joy.
